Fourth and LAST EDITION

Call for applications

Applications are now open for the fourth and last edition of the PhD programme in Computational Biology, organised by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), Siemens SA and the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), with support of the Fundação PT, the Luso-American Foundation and the Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional (FCCN).

From September 2008, 12 students, supported by FCT fellowships, will receive a full year’s graduate training and education, by an international faculty, at the IGC, in Oeiras, Portugal, followed by 3 years of research training in a well established laboratory, anywhere in the world. The IGC hosts 30 international research groups engaged in different aspects of life science and biomedical research, offering a multidisciplinary environment where both computational and experimental approaches are pursued.

The programme is conducted in close cooperation with the FLAD Collaboratorium in Computational Biology, and with several other institutions in Portugal and abroad. The IGC is a leading centre for multidisciplinary research in Life Sciences.

This programme aims to attract highly motivated and independent thinkers with a strong interest in Computational Biology, who aspire for excellence and team work, and at engaging in innovative, risk-taking research. We seek candidates who are not afraid to work hard and relish overcoming scientific challenges. Applicants with unconventional academic track records are encouraged.

Candidates will have successfully completed a minimum of 4 years' higher education (for Europeans, 240 ECTS) by September 1st, 2008, in any area of Life, Exact or Computer Sciences and Technologies. Exceptional cases may be considered for admission. Foreign students are eligible for funding, provided that the second phase of training is hosted by a Portuguese laboratory.

The deadline for applications is 4 April 2008.

Applicants should apply online, providing a brief curriculum vitae, a letter of motivation, and letters or contacts of referees.

Hardcopies of the full application documents should also be posted to:
